It's been over a week since Plymouth avoided relegation from the Championship, and we are still waiting to find out who will take charge of the team next season.

The best betting sites continue to monitor the situation as to who the next manager to occupy the Home Park dugout will be.

Interim manager Neil Dewsnip left the post after guiding the Pilgrims to safety on the final day of the season thanks to a 1-0 home win over Hull City

The search continues for a permanent successor to Ian Foster, who was relieved of his duties on April 1 after a dismal run of form – just three months after replacing Steven Schumacher.

Who will be the Plymouth manager at the beginning of the 2024/25 season? Let’s take a look at the odds supplied by football betting sites

Bayern Assistant Barry Remains Favourite

Anthony Barry remains the new 4/1 favourite with football betting sites to become the next Plymouth Argyle manager.

The former midfielder spent much of his playing career in the lower reaches of the English pyramid, but his managerial career has gone from strength to strength.

Although he has yet to manage a club, he has been an assistant at Chelsea, Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Portugal.

Barry, 37, linked up with former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel again at Bayern Munich 12 months ago as a set-piece specialist.

On his appointment, Tuchel said: “As a top team, you need to be top at set-pieces. It’s an important area for us that we want to work on. His work with set pieces at Chelsea was on a completely new level for me.”

Rosenior Looking For Quick Return

One of the most surprising sackings at the end of the EFL season, was Hull City's decision to remove Liam Rosenior from his role at Hull City boss.

Rosenior paid the price for not playing the style of football club owner Acun Ilicali wanted as the Tigers missed the playoffs by three points.

A 1-0 defeat at Plymouth was Rosenior's final game in charge of City, and he has emerged as the 6/1 joint second favourite with betting apps to become the Pilgrims next permanent manager.

Rosenior can feel his sacking was harsh, but he has proved to be one of the better managers in the Championship and he won't be out of work for long.

Could Cook Serve Up Success At Argyle?

Paul Cook can also be backed at 6/1, but it remains to be seen whether he decides to leave Chesterfield after a hugely successful season.

Cook guided the Spirites to the National League title and the club will be back playing League Two football for the first time in seven seasons.

It might be too soon for Cook to jump ship and bigger jobs will become available in the future if he decides to stay at the newly-promoted club.

Pearson Among Contenders For Job

Nigel Pearson spent the end of last season as a pundit for Sky Sports, but you get the feeling a return to the dugout is in his very near future.

A 2-0 defeat at Cardiff at the end of October spelt the end for Pearson at Bristol City, so after a break of six and a half months, the experienced manager will be lining up his next role.

Plymouth need a manager who knows the Championship inside out and Person ticks that box having managed a number of Championship clubs including Hull City and Leicester City, who he won promotion with in 2015.

Pearson is one of several managers priced at 16/1 for the Plymouth job, and he may need to be convinced by the club’s potential and would no doubt prefer to take over at a play-off contender rather than a relegation candidate.

Jones To Return To South Coast?

Nathan Jones is another 16/1 pick, but many will feel those odds are not sufficiently long for a manager who recently took a job.

It is true that Plymouth are a division higher than Charlton, but Jones was only installed in south London in February and is unlikely to jump ship so soon.

However, Jones has shown little loyalty as previous clubs he has worked at, including leaving Luton to manager Southampton.

If past history is anything to go by, Jones is capable of walking away from one job into another, so his odds of 16/1 shouldn't be dismissed.

Could McCann, Murphy or Ainsworth Take Over?

Grant McCann has had quite a season at Doncaster Rovers. Involved in a League Two relegation battle for much of the campaign, a stunning end to 2023/24 saw them qualify for the play-offs.

But Rovers lost in a penalty shootout to Crewe means it's another season in League Two for Doncaster.

But will McCann be in charge at the Keepmoat Stadium when the new EFL season gets under way in August? McCann is also 16/1 to be Plymouth's next manager.

Next Plymouth manager

Gareth Ainsworth’s failed stint at Queens Park Rangers may make it difficult for him to land another Championship job for the time being. The former Wycombe Wanderers boss is therefore worth avoiding at 16/1.

Brian Barry-Murphy, also priced at 16/1, is an interesting inclusion. Currently in charge of the Manchester City Elite Development Squad, the Irishman will no doubt want to take another managerial job at senior level at some point.

Is Mowbray Ready To Return?

The last season will go down as one of the more unusual campaigns in the long career of Tony Mowbray.

He began the season in charge of Sunderland but got sacked in early December. In January Mowbray (16/1) was named as Wayne Rooney's replacement as Birmingham City's manager.

However, in February, it was announced that the 60-year-old would step away from his role on medical grounds. Is he in a rush to return to management? Time will tell.

Heckingbottom Also In The Mix

Paul Heckingbottom is another manager who was forced to swap the touchline for a role as a pundit.

Heckingbottom has been out of work since being fired by Sheffield United in December following a 5-0 defeat at fellow-relegated side Burnley.

Working on a low budget, Heckingbottom deserves credit for leading the Blades back to the Premier League.

It shouldn't be too long before the 46-year-old is back in work, probably in the Championship. He is also available at 16/1 in this market.
