British Grand Prix Predictions: The Panel's Best Bets And F1 Tips

2024 British Grand Prix Betting Tips

Formula 1 heads back to Silverstone this weekend for the British Grand Prix and hopes are high for a homegrown winner.

Briton Lando Norris has thrown down the challenge to reigning world champion Max Verstappen in recent races, ending pre-season suggestions of the Red Bull driver strolling to a fourth title.

Although Verstappen holds an 81-point advantage over Norris in the drivers’ standings, the gap between the pair on the track is shrinking with Norris chasing home Verstappen in second in two of the three previous races.

The two then collided when battling for the lead in Austria last weekend, ending Norris’ race and dropping Verstappen to fifth as Mercedes’ George Russell gratefully gobbled up the win.

Russell became the fifth different driver to win a race this year heading into round 12 at Silverstone, although the Mercedes man is an outsider to back up his Austria success in his home grand prix.

Formula 1 betting sites make Verstappen the odds-on favourite to win the British Grand Prix for only the second time, with Norris an intriguing price of 3/1

Everyone else is double figures, including eight-time British Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton, who is always a threat at this track.

It shapes up to be a fascinating race, and the British summertime could add to the drama with forecasts calling for showers throughout the weekend.

Drivers and bettors alike will need to tread carefully and The Panel are hopeful of steering punters in the right direction with their three British Grand Prix tips.

British Grand Prix Prediction: McLaren Can Motor Round Silverstone

Silverstone is one of the fastest tracks of the year and presents numerous challenges for the drivers as they race through its flowing, high-speed corners often being buffeted by the wind.

It’s a circuit that should suit Red Bull, although that’s true of most of the venues on the F1 calendar, but perhaps it’s even more tailor-made for McLaren.

The McLaren looks to be the quicker car on the straights now with the data suggesting Red Bull had a disadvantage to their papaya-coloured rivals in Austria in that regard.

Norris will have plenty of backers on betting apps at 3/1 to record only his second win in F1, but The Panel are slightly wary of jumping on the bandwagon and wonder if his team-mate could upstage him.

Piastri should have had his first-ever podium finish at last year’s British Grand Prix, only for a late safety car to scupper his chances, but has since laid that ghost to rest.

He’s finished runner-up in two of the last four races and it could have been even better for the Australian had he not been hit with qualifying penalties in Italy and Austria.

Piastri seems to go well on these quicker circuits and is a serious podium contender at 5/4.

British Grand Prix Tips: Little Between Top Contenders

Betting sites are forecasting a straight fight between McLaren and Red Bull for first place, but it would be wrong to completely rule out the chances of Mercedes and Ferrari.

Mercedes have made vast strides forward in recent races, culminating in Russell's win, while Ferrari were considered a threat to Red Bull as recently as Monaco.

It’s shaping up to be a very competitive race around a wet Silverstone, a track that’s thrown up some really thrilling races in recent years with close finishes aplenty.

The last four British Grands Prix have been won by five seconds or less, including Norris chasing home Verstappen last year.

We're starting to get used to close finishes as the top-four teams have bunched up with four of the last five races decided by under five seconds.

The recent trend for close finishes both at Silverstone and elsewhere has pointed The Panel towards backing the race winner to come home less than five seconds ahead of the runner-up.

British Grand Prix Best Bets: Alpine On The Way Up

It’s not just the top of the grid that’s bunching up with the midfield also increasingly competitive now Alpine are back in the mix for points.

The Renault works outfit endured a nightmare start to 2024 but have steadily turned things around, scoring points in five of the last six races.

Both cars have finished in the points in two of the last three outings and Esteban Ocon has a decent record of finishing in the top-10 at Silverstone.

Given Silverstone's proximity to the majority of the team’s bases, most are expected to bring upgrades to the race, which slightly muddies the waters.

Haas is not one of those teams based nearby though and there's a hope one of Alpine's main rivals for points recently will stand still as the Oxfordshire-based outfit move forward.

Alpine scored points consistently last season and look to have rediscovered their level, making the 4/1 on both drivers finishing in the points look generous.

The Panel Tip 3: Alpine Double Points Finish – 4/1 With Coral
